The Dwight Morrow baseball team had a remarkable season this year. The young team powered through hardships and created one of the best seasons so far by winning their first Division Title in the past 55 years.
“This is definitely the most talent Englewood has had in the past 50 years or so. We knew what we were capable of and we had revenge on our minds from last year’s loss of the League Championship. We wanted what’s ours and we were ready to go get it,” senior pitcher David Vasquez explained honestly.
David and Charlie Sorbanelli were the senior captains for the Dwight Morrow Varsity Baseball Team. Charlie won most valuable player of the day for the May 18 game against the Frisch School where they won 8-2 and marked their Division success.
Because the team team lost the League Championships in the 16-17 season, the boys were motivated to make their groundbreaking comeback in the 17-18 season by winning the League Championships against Dumont 9-7 on April 30.
“For a long time, Dwight Morrow Baseball was known as a team that was okay with winning only a few games a season. All of that changed as soon as we got a new coaching staff and a new wave of talented players,” catcher Miguel Castro said.
Head Coach Mario Lugones Jr., who came to Dwight Morrow last year, points to the players for the success of the season.
“Last year’s team was great! We made a lot of strides for the baseball program. Last year was the first time our program qualified for a state tournament in close to 40 years. They set the bar for success this season, with this year’s team,” Coach Lugones noted. “I’m really excited about the future of the Dwight Morrow baseball program with all the talent the underclassmen bring,” the Coach added.
The team has some outstanding star players but the team spirit also allowed them to keep the positive attitude as they worked hard to win games while also sharing a love for the sport.
“The season went better than expected. Once we started kicking up the offense, we were in great shape,” sophomore Orlando Sosa noted.
With a lot of talent coming in from both underclassmen and returning players, the future of the Dwight Morrow boys baseball team is strong. Some underclassmen to keep an eye out for are catcher Miguel Castro and center fielder Orlando Sosa. Both sophomores are listed in the Top 40 Sophomores in NJ Baseball.
The team’s successful season came to a close in the first round of the North 1 Group 3 state sectional finals and a loss against Pascack Valley High School in Hillsdale. However, it is no lie that the 17-18 season for the Dwight Morrow Baseball Team was one of the best in its history.
