Raiders Win and Grow
Girls Varsity Basketball
The Dwight Morrow High School Girls Varsity Basketball team played a good season and had growth within the team, despite the team’s low statistics. At this writing the team had a 4-12 record.
“We’re not where we wanted to be this season but we had a lot of growth,” Coach Milton McManus said.
However, two of the four wins were big wins, one against Saddle Brook and the other against Northern Valley Demarest. The battle against Northern Valley Demarest was especially gratifying for the team. During that February 13, 2020, game the team was neck to neck, down by 4 points in the last few seconds of the fourth quarter. Senior Janesa Cockburn shot a three pointer with 20 seconds left, making the game down by 1 point. Then sophomore Blase Blakie went in for a lay up and the team won with a point to spare.
“Playing basketball with this team was an amazing learning experience and I’m already so excited for another successful season,” Blase said.
The seniors made wins possible by helping the underclassmen in practice as well as games. Senior captains, guard Janesa Cockburn and center Rashaya Richardson, were good models, and along with senior guard Sasha Cheek and center Kaya Hawkings, offered much support. They will be missed but because of their leadership Coach McManus is confident in the team for next year.
“We developed as a team and the team has a bright future,” Coach McManus said.
One promising underclassmen for next season is Shania Defresse. As a sophomore, she was a key player as well as a starter for the Dwight Morrow team. Beside Shania, the team has many capable players rising up the ranks who will become the new wave for Raiders Girls Basketball.
