NHS Inducts on Zoom

Scholarship, leadership, service, and character. These key principles are what DMAE’s National Honor’s Society chapter, Delta Sigma Mu, strives to uphold. On Monday, June 8, 2020, 36 eager inductees gathered on Zoom for the commencement ceremony.

“The induction ceremony did not have some of the usual special parts, such as the candle lighting ceremony since we were limited to Zoom,” said NHS advisor Dorothy McClelland. “Managing the selection process was also challenging. Doing it virtually was much harder and less collegial than usual, but everyone rose to the occasion,” she added.

Despite these challenges, Ms. McClelland and the 2019-2020 NHS officers were able to hold a successful induction ceremony. The program opened with Sean Park, Caleb Kim, and April Yoo giving their statements. Additionally, Superintendent Robert Kravitz and Principal Benjamin Suro gave inspirational and congratulatory speeches. These were followed by a slideshow in which the new officers and inductees were presented, as their peers, family members, and teachers watched and celebrated.

“It is my pleasure to be the new president of such a prestigious organization and lead a group of such intellectual individuals. I want to show everyone what it means to be a leader,” newly elected president Jeffrey Hong stated.

Though the 2019-2020 year was cut short, Ms. McClelland was proud of the work that the NHS was able to get done.

“This year’s chapter was the best that I’ve had the pleasure to advise so far. I hope we will continue to build on the momentum we have going with this wonderful group of students,” Ms. McClelland concluded.
