Alison Le Wins Scholastic Gold Key & National Medal

Out of thousands of applicants, junior Alison Le won the Gold Key in the 2021 Scholastic Art and Writing Awards competition for her artwork titled “Everything’s Fine, Relax!” in the digital art category. The Scholastic Art and Writing Awards is a prestigious competition for high schoolers to showcase their creativity in various mediums, such as journalism or photography. Only a select few individuals receive the Gold Key in their category, the highest award someone can get.

“When I saw my name and the Gold Key status next to it, it felt surreal to be recognized for my art,” Alison said.

Alison’s piece was an insightful illustration of the difficult journeys one goes through when achieving mental health. “Everything’s Fine, Relax!” was made with the hope to bring awareness to mental illnesses that are usually gone unnoticed. Alison originally created the piece for a mental illness awareness article for The Maroon Tribune, but she also did a surplus of research on various mental illnesses to make it the best it could be.

“I want my art to make people curious and also enjoy the colors I use. I’m a really positive and outgoing person who enjoys conveying social justice issues through ‘serious art’ but also do fun, silly art,” she added.

Alison is also the co-president of the Art Club, encouraging others to express themselves through art. Club adviser Mauricio Rodriguez said that throughout her high school career, Alison has been developing her skills and discovering new mediums in the club as well as in her own time.

“We are very proud of Alison. We think that this award is a sign of things to come for her this year and in the future,” Mr. Rodriguez commented.

The competition may be over, but Alison is not done displaying her art to the world. “Everything’s Fine, Relax!” moved on for judging on the national stage and Alison became a national medalist and was awarded the Scholastic National Medal.

“People don’t realize this but art is an extension of yourself; it’s all your thoughts, skills, and capabilities all in one,” Alison said.

Alison also showcases her art in DMAE’s clubs and events, such as the upcoming Englewood Idol. Additionally, Alison is one of several artists on the DMAE Vans shoe design team with the Art Club, representing DMAE nationally in the competition. The DMAE community is excited to see what artwork she plans to create next, and think it will undoubtedly be as extraordinary as the award-winning piece here.
