Tough Season and Breaking Records
The Maroon Raiders Girls Softball team almost never played a game in its entire 2020-2021 season. With a delayed volleyball season, the Softball team could not begin any form of instruction because of a Covid-19 scare, causing Head Coach Casey Brennan to undergo a 14 day quarantine.
“When we were able to start practicing we had four girls who were showing up. Coach Brennan explained.
The softball team began the season practicing everyday, and expected to finish the season without playing a single game. However, because the Coach and Athletic Director Joseph Armental were able to recruit enough players, they began playing games.
“Between Mr. Armental and I, we were able to pull together enough girls to have a season,” Coach Brennan said.
The Maroon Raiders played six games, and won three of them, an improvement in performance from the previous year.
“There isn’t too much I expect for next season,” junior Grace Yang said. “I just hope that we have enough players to hopefully play a full season, and that we continue to better our record each year.”
Like many high school athletic programs throughout the nation, the Raider’s softball team was no exception to the surprises and twists of these abnormal seasons. There is light at the end of the tunnel however, with incoming freshman standouts and an improved record, both players and coaches are looking forward to next season.
“I think this year was one of the best softball years in terms of commitment and effort. I would say to really just enjoy the time together playing on the field,” said junior Sofia Figueroa, the team captain.
