Girls Soccer Team Champs of the Big North American Division

As the Dwight Morrow Maroon Raiders stepped on the field for their final game of the year, tensions could not have been higher. With a 7-1 record to back them up, this season has been the strongest they have had. What first started as a scoreless game turned into a fierce fight for victory in the coming play time. Fort Lee opened up the scoreboard, but the Raiders were quick to bounce back with two goals of their own. After each team scored one goal each, a score of 3-2 was lit up on the scoreboard as the referees blew the whistle, indicating halftime.

“Fort Lee scoring first was almost like a blessing in disguise, it really fired us up as a team and we regained the lead back very quickly,” senior and team captain, Anthea Iglesia, said.

Things in the second half began to slow down as the Raiders inched closer and closer to the championship title. With both teams scoring another goal each, the final whistle blew with a 4-3 victory in the Raiders favor. The team rejoiced in happiness as history was being made since it was the first time the Dwight Morrow Maroon Raiders girls soccer team had won a championship. When asked about what was so different this season, it was clear there was one answer; team chemistry.

“We started practicing much earlier for this season, sometime in June rather than the usual start time of August,” senior Paulina Malec explained. “Because of this, we were able to participate in two summer leagues which really allowed us to get to know each other as players.”

With players already looking forward to their next season, Dwight Morrow is excited to watch the ladies soccer team bring in some more championship trophies.
