Esports Club Scores

A Winning Combination

DMHS’s club universe is diverse and members are having fun and doing interesting things.  and A relatively new yet popular club is the Esports Club, run by teacher adviser Daniel Sardo.

“Personally I think it is a great opportunity for non-traditionally athletic students to be part of a sports team and engage in a sports dynamic in high school,” Mr. Sardo commented.

The members of this club actively participate in Esports competitions. These competitions are intense with biannually updated rules and guidelines as well as prizes for winners and runner-ups depending on the game being played.

DMHS has several  Esports teams: a “Rocket League” team and a “League of Legends” team, and a new “Super Smash Bros” team. Each team has between four and six players. In the fall season, the “League of Legends” team won second place and were thrilled. A student from Livingston High School in Livingston, NJ, was the winner of the Fall Competition.

Generally speaking, every regional league is rewarded with a trophy and sometimes an invitation to the national tournament. At the national level, teams compete for the chance to win approximately $50,000 worth of scholarship money per game. In these tournaments, only specific video games, such as “League of Legends,” are eligible to be played.

“I really like the idea of an Esports competition. I think it is the perfect way to branch out from traditional sports,” freshman Sanjushree Bastia said.

Esports competitions are a new way for students to branch out of their comfort zones to learn new things and meet new people. The DMHS Esports Club offers these benefits and the chance to qualify for Esports scholarships. The Club hopes anyone looking to turn their gaming skills from a hobby into a sport will join the club and compete in various competitions.

In the upcoming spring competition, DMHS will compete against various Esports clubs from different high schools.
