Lady Empowerment Club Holds Plate Breaking Ceremony

On Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2022, the Lady Empowerment Club held a Plate Breaking ceremony in DMHS North Cafeteria. The purpose of this event was to allow the women at the school to overcome what makes them insecure, and any bad habits they may have. Teachers Judy Aronson and Amelia Rostant, the advisors for the club, supervised the event.

During this event participants wrote down negative thoughts, problems they needed to face, and insecurities onto a paper plate. In order to feel free from their problems, they ripped up the plates. This allowed for the ladies to bond together as a community and see that they were not alone in the difficulties they were facing.

Ma’Jia Foster, Samma Faragalla, and Kayla Griffin came up with the idea to hold this event as a bonding exercise. This allowed everyone to get to know the other members of the club better.

“It was a great opportunity to face a lot of the problems and bad thoughts we ignore by quite literally destroying them,” Ma’Jia Foster, co-president, stated.

Not only did the club members release their negative emotions, but they also got to reveal their unguarded selves to each other. During the event they had various conversations and shared laughs together. They also listened to music and ate snacks while enjoying each other’s presence.

“These students are intelligent, compassionate, empathetic, grounded yet laser-focused on uplifting the young women in the DMAE community. Lady Empowerment provides a space where students are free to discuss, dissect and explore the many issues that encompass the female experience, without judgment,” Ms. Rostant said.

The event was a touching one with a great deal of meaning behind it. The Lady Empowerment Club’s goal is to create a safe space, a goal that was reached.
