Blood Drive Brings Out Success
As the new year arrived, students kept up their motivation to continue their engagement with their clubs and school commitments. That is definitely true with the National Honors Society (NHS) and Red Cross, as these two clubs hosted a joint blood drive on Thursday, Jan. 12, 2023, in the gymnasium throughout the school day. A blood drive is where people voluntarily donate their own blood in order to be used for various purposes, such as surgeries or cancer treatments. This schoolwide event aimed to expose students to the joy and importance of volunteerism.
“Two of the four pillars of the NHS are leadership and service. As an NHS advisor, I wanted the students in NHS to take charge and show leadership in an organized event like this blood drive,” NHS advisor David Kim expressed.
The event was an outstanding success. About 38 students donated their blood to the American Red Cross organization, for a total exceeding 100 units of blood. Each participant received two rewards: a $5 Dunkin Donuts gift card and a chance to enter into a sweepstakes for Super Bowl tickets. In addition to the blood donors, more than 20 students volunteered to facilitate the blood drive, primarily members of NHS and Red Cross. Both clubs wished for the blood drive to become an “unofficial tradition” on campus.
“Hopefully, our blood drive catalyzes a tradition of donating blood on our campus every year,” Red Cross Co-President and senior Olivia Hong commented.
This amazing experience has truly been one to remember for both students and teachers alike. Both NHS and Red Cross have great ambitions for similar projects and fundraisers for the rest of the school year, so keep your eyes open for what is to come!
